Ministry of Industry and Information Technology: The comprehensive strength and core competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises have been continuously enhanced.

At the press conference on the theme of "Ten Years in China" this morning (14th), Xin Guobin, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said that in the past decade, the vitality of various market players in China has been fully stimulated, and the comprehensive strength and competitiveness of China enterprises have been significantly enhanced.

Xin Guobin introduced that from 2012 to 2021, the total assets and operating income of the top 500 manufacturing enterprises in China increased from 19.7 trillion yuan and 21.7 trillion yuan to 44.33 trillion yuan and 40.24 trillion yuan respectively. The comprehensive strength, core competitiveness and ability to fulfill social responsibilities of small and medium-sized enterprises have been continuously enhanced. By the end of 2021, there were 150 million market players in China, up 2.8 times compared with 2012, of which 48.423 million were enterprises, up 1.7 times, and more than 99% were small and medium-sized enterprises. The number of industrial SMEs above designated size reached 401,000, with operating income reaching 75.5 trillion yuan, total profit reaching 4.7 trillion yuan and total assets reaching 77.3 trillion yuan, up by 23.5%, 38.7%, 37.1% and 101.5% respectively compared with 2012. In 2021, the total number of private individual employment in China reached 400 million, an increase of more than 200 million compared with 2012.

According to the data of the fourth economic census, the number of employees in small and medium-sized enterprises accounts for 80% of all employees in enterprises. Private enterprises, mainly small and medium-sized enterprises, became China’s largest foreign trade business entity in 2019. In 2021, the proportion of import and export value reached 48.6%, and the contribution to foreign trade growth exceeded 58.2%. In 2020, the R&D expenditure of industrial enterprises above designated size reached 1.53 trillion yuan, 2.55 times that of 2012, and the investment intensity increased from 0.71% to 1.41%. The number of industrial enterprises with R&D activities increased from 47,000 in 2012 to 147,000 in 2020, and the proportion of enterprises increased from 13.7% to 36.7%.

Xin Guobin said that up to now, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has cultivated 4,762 state-level "little giant" enterprises and 848 state-level single champion manufacturing enterprises, which has led to the cultivation of more than 40,000 provincial-level specialized and innovative small and medium-sized enterprises and the warehousing of more than 110,000 enterprises. The average R&D intensity of individual champion enterprises and "little giant" enterprises is 5% and 7% respectively, which is 5 times and 7 times of the average level of industrial enterprises above designated size in China. It is an important guarantee to improve the vitality of China’s economic innovation and enhance the toughness and competitiveness of industrial chain supply chain.
