The number of "giant pandas in water" Yangtze finless porpoises has increased to more than 700.

CCTV News:The Yangtze finless porpoise is known as the "giant panda in the water". As the "indigenous people" of the Yangtze River, it is also the vane of biodiversity in the Yangtze River ecosystem. What changes have taken place in their homes after the implementation of the Great Protection of the Yangtze River? Let’s go to Poyang Lake Basin, the paradise of finless porpoises.

Over the past few days, more than 20 Yangtze finless porpoises have been observed playing in the waters of Yangzizhou in Nanchang section of Ganjiang River. Observers found that there were three finless porpoises whose bellies rolled round and jumped out of the water from time to time, obviously in a state of pregnancy and labor.

Yangzizhou waters are located at the junction of Ganjiang River and Poyang Lake, and there are many fish in the water depth, which is the natural delivery room of finless porpoises. The local finless porpoise nanny escort team was set up to escort 24 hours a day. Monitoring in May this year found that the number of Yangtze finless porpoises in Poyang Lake has increased to more than 700.

In addition to the Yangtze finless porpoise, all kinds of fish in Poyang Lake have also ushered in the spawning season. The local fishery administration is putting ecological floating beds and artificial floating islands in hundreds of specific waters to provide spawning beds for fish. Reed, water celery and other organisms are fixed on the water surface, and their roots are attached with rich algae, becoming a canteen for small fish.

The good water ecological environment of Poyang Lake attracts more than 700,000 migratory birds to spend the winter here every year, and the number of birds recorded in Poyang Lake area reaches 4.63 million.

Wang Wenjuan, Associate Research Fellow, Institute of Life Sciences, Nanchang University:Poyang Lake is the last reservoir before the Yangtze River enters the lower reaches, and the number of endangered waterbirds such as white cranes and oriental storks is also increasing continuously. It can be said that Poyang Lake plays a vital role in the biodiversity protection of the whole Yangtze River.
